No fewer than 12, 915 ghost workers have been uncovered in the staff payroll of 23 local government councils of Sokoto state during the last junior staff verification exercise, the Commissioner for Local Government and Community Development, Alhaji Mohammed Maniru Dan Iya, has disclosed.
Iya made the disclosure while briefing newsmen on the achievements recorded by his ministry in the last one year, saying that the ministry “will soon embark on senior staff cadre verification exercise.”
According to him, apart from the N 319 million realized during the previous exercise, which was announced by Governor Aminu Tambuwal during this year’s Democracy Day celebrations, there was still N100 million unclaimed scattered in various bank accounts.
However, the commissioner said the administration of Governor Tambuwal had since abolished joint account in Sokoto state.
According to him, “all the money meant for local governments will go to them; there is no joint account in Sokoto state.”
He said as part of effort to sanitize the system, and boost internally generated revenue of the local councils, the services of some consultants had been engaged and it was yielding results.
He also said all the ongoing projects inherited from the former administration would be completed this year.
