THE leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Edo state, their counterparts in the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council (JNC) Wednesday staged a peaceful protest calling on Governor Adams Oshiomhole to sack the state Head of Service, Jerry Obazele for “gross incompetence.”

Speaking on behalf of the state workers and the unions, chairman of the JNC, Comrade Shaka Otoede said the continued stay in office of the HOS would further hamper the cordial relationship between the workers and the Governor.

The workers accused the HOS of being the only sole signatory to the proposed contributory pension scheme.
Otoede said: “Comrade Jerry Obazele’s impunity lies in and the manner he went ahead to deduct the pension contribution of 8 per cent from the workers’ salaries without recourse to our earlier appeal and advice to stay action on the matter until the proper framework for implementation is put in place.”

“We noted with disaffection, Comrade Obazele’s unwillingness to discuss the issue on behalf of government, hence we resolved to commence a three-day warning strike with effect from Monday May 25, 2015.”

The Guardian could not get any response from the office of the HOS and several calls were neither picked nor returned.

Workers block entrance to NNPC Headquarters......

Oil workers on Wednesday disrupted activities at the headquarters of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation in Abuja.

The workers, who are members of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, NNPC headquarters branch, blocked the entrance to the corporation, stopping other employees and senior management officials from gaining entry to the premises.

Numbering about 50, the union members, who wore red attires, made sure that they delayed both the employees and guests of the corporation for some minutes by asking them questions before finally allowing them entry into the premises.

When our correspondent asked the head of the group the reason for the demonstration, he said the union members were not protesting.

The official, who refused to disclose his name, stated that he would not speak with the press because the group had yet to get any official clearance from the headquarters of the union.

While making enquiries from some other senior members of the union, our correspondent observed that some of the unionists decided to stop the corporation’s Group Executive Director, Gas and Power, Dr. David Ige, from driving into the premises for some minutes.

He was, however, allowed entry after exchanging pleasantries with some of the senior members of the union, who hailed him as his driver drove him into the corporation.

Our correspondent gathered that the conflict between the union and the NNPC management had lasted for up to a week.

When contacted, the Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, NNPC, Mr. Ohi Alegbe, stated that the situation was being handled by the corporation’s management.

“There has been series of meetings with them and it started since last week. It is as a result of some issues and we are on them. Once they are settled, I will let you know,” he said.

Hundreds throngs Enugu airport to pay last respects to late Sen. Uche Chukwumerije....

Hundreds of people on Thursday besieged the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu to pay their last respects to late Uche Chukwumerije, a senator, who was en route Abia for burial.

Mr. Chukwumerije, also a former minister of information, died in Abuja on April 19 after a protracted illness.

Leading the sympathisers were members of Ohaneze Ndigbo, the socio-cultural organization of the Igbo, including its president, Gary Enwo-Igariwey.

Also present were relations, political associates, cultural troupes and well-wishers.

At a brief prayer session, the Methodist Bishop of the Diocese of Agbani in Enugu State, Bishop Onagha Bienonwu, thanked God for the life of the late senator.

Mr. Bienonwu described him as a man of his words and prayed God to grant his soul eternal rest.

Also speaking with newsmen, the presidential adviser on inter-party affairs, Ben Obi, described Chukwumerije as a committed patriot and the voice of the voiceless.

“He was fearless and courageous and we will definitely miss him,’’ Mr. Obi said.

In his own reaction, Mr. Enwo-Igariwey said the Ohaneze Ndigbo was pained by the loss of Chukwumerije.

He said the organization was, however, consoled that the late senator left behind people who could carry on with his ideals.

He recalled that the late senator was outstanding during the Nigerian civil war in information dissemination for the secessionist Biafra.

The first son of the deceased, Chair Chukwumerije, said his father’s demise was a wake-up call for the Igbo to speak up for their cause.

He described his father as his mentor and friend, saying he would miss him.

Among the dance troupes at the airport were the Nkpokiti dancers from Umunze in Anambra and Ohafia War Dance troupe from Abia.

The late senator will be buried in Isuochi, Abia on Friday.

Why I built Library for Ebonyi INEC- NYSC Member

A Batch ‘B’ corps member serving with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Ebonyi State, Mr. Omolekan Oluwole, has donated a mini-library equipped with research materials to the state headquarters of the commission in Abakaliki.

The project was part of his Community Development Service (CDS), which according to him, “is one of the integral parts of the four-cardinal programme of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).”

Oluwole, during the inauguration and handing over of the library said after critically observing the challenges faced by the workers of the commission in accessing relevant information, he saw the need to establish a mini-library. He added that he was motivated to embark on the project following the go-ahead order given to him by the NYSC and the commission.

He noted that the library would serve the inquiry and learning needs of the commission as well as building knowledge and confidence in seeking and processing information among the workers, adding that it would also help to promote the staff outward thinking and positive mental reasoning and perception.

He maintained that service year was not a period for merriment, but a time to make sacrifices for community development and charged other corps members to put in their best during the service year.

Unveiling the mini-library equipped with book shelves, plastic chairs, reading tables, relevant books, manuals, journals/magazines, Oluwole said it was his personal contribution to the development of the INEC and the entire community and charged the commission to take further steps to expand the library.

The INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Dr. Lawrence Azubuike, thanked Oluwole for coming to their rescue, just as he recalled how the commission existed for years without a place where workers could access information.

The REC represented by the Head of Department, General Administration and Procurement, Dr. S. Johnson, described the corps member as humble and hard-working and urged his colleagues to emulate him.

He noted that INEC and NYSC had maintained synergy for years just as he paid tribute to the corps members for the success recorded in the just concluded general elections, describing youth corps members as indispensable tool in Nigeria’s electoral process.

The state NYSC Coordinator, Mrs E.G. Mbachi, noted that the purpose of establishing the NYSC has been achieved through the likes of Oluwole and urged his colleagues to emulate him by embarking on more projects in their various places of primary assignment.   Represented by the Zonal Inspector, Abakaliki, Mr E.J. Isau, she described NYCS as “a wonderful initiative that has brought national integration to the country.”

How I survived Cancer!!!!!!!!!!!!

The late Oronto Natei Douglas certainly was not the biggest of men, but he was larger than life in the eyes of many.  This has been reflected in the eulogies read in his honour since he died last month.

Douglas, until his demise was the Special Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Research, Documentation and Strategy. He died after years of battle with stomach cancer.

OND, as he was fondly called was a man of many parts who trained as a lawyer, made a name as an environmental rights activist, but ended up in government,

At the even with a rich attendance of personalities, the real gist and surprise came from the tribute by the Minister for Finance, Dr. Ngpzi Okonjo-Iweala.

The woman who is one of the most influential actors in the Jonathan administration couldn’t hide her how hard she was hit by Oronto’s death. She went on to reveal that she survived cancer and she often encouraged the diseased to work towards doing same.

The stunned audience listened as Okonjo-Iweala spoke. She said: “Oronto and I had something in common. We were both sufferers of cancer. I am a cancer survivor. I went through this for three years of my life and ended my last treatment 15 years ago. I had two surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation. Through cancer I learned to focus on the big things. I learned to focus on the positives and let the negative slide over. When I found out Oronto had the disease I shared my story with him and told him the way to fight the disease is to keep working, keep up with the positives and let the negatives slide. I am happy with the reports we have heard here that he worked till the end.”

Beyond the minister’s positive confession, the night was rich with the attendance of notable Nigerians in various fields and leanings. This explains why the events leading to Oronto’s burial have been well attended with different groups ensuring that they fully participated in giving the man who started from very humble beginnings in Okoroba Village in Nembe Local Government Area Bayelsa State yet became a bridge connecting people, was very much celebrated.

First was the night of tributes held at the Eko Hotel and Suites on Tuesday April 28. Anchored by Nollywood stars Kate Henshaw and Charles Novia, friends of Oronto spoke glowingly of his good works, with all saying that he lived a life worthy of emulation. Rita Dominic, Hilda Dokuboh and Monalisa Chinda performed the fertility dance in tribute to Oronto planned book on women’s rights tentatively titled The Orgasmic Rights.

The events leading to interment of the late presidential aide, who in his heydays as an activist participated in the writing of the Kaiama Declaration (Ijaw manifesto for progress) just as he was the youngest member of team that defended playwright Ken Saro-Wiwa during the Ogoni Nine trial under the Abacha regime were well attended. On Thursday 30th April, friends again gathered at the This Day Dome Abuja to celebrate him.

For the Abuja gathering, the broadcaster Moji Makanjuola and National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) chairman, Professor Chidi Odinkalu, a long time friend of the deceased were the anchors. Permanent -Secretary of the Ministry of Power, Ambassador Godknows Igali welcomed guests, even as he disclosed that it wasn’t easy organising the evening of tributes. He said Oronto’s friends from the civil society, his foreign associates and highly ranked government officials all wanted to hold events to mark his passage. But all groups agreed to come together for the night of tributes. Just as the letters written to Oronto’s family were full of commendations from the high and the low, the Abuja leg of the night of tributes had speaker after speaker commending the late activist for being a good friend.

Pastor Bakare’s attendance came as a surprise to those who didn’t know Oronto had a good relationship with the tough-talking preacher.

Former governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi was also one of the big names from the opposition that came to pay his last respect to the deceased. Oronto’s younger brother, Gift gave an emotional tribute to his late sibling, saying their family was proud of him. When it was the turn of his former boss, Chief DSP Alamieyeseigha he said Oronto was a remarkable individual, adding that he stood by him through all his travails. For the former Bayelsa state governor, the ideas of the man who worked in his cabinet as the commissioner of Information will always be remembered as hero of the Niger-Delta course

Abortion could lead to breast Cancer...... Experts Warns

The many disadvantages of having an abortion cannot be overemphasised, and according to The Foundation for Africa Cultural Heritage, cancer is now one of the risks associated with undergoing an abortion.

According to FACH president, Dr. Nkechi Asogwa, many cases of breast cancer have been linked to the aftermath of an abortion.

Asogwa further said that contraceptives and other birth control pills that have been banned in the United States due to their side effects were being shipped to Nigeria, adding that Nigerians deserve to be told the medical risks involved in taking birth control pills, to enable them to make informed choice.

According to her:

"When you terminate a pregnancy you end many ongoing processes in the body such as the preparation of breast for the secretion of milk. So the tissues that were cut off suddenly would become fragile and they can trigger the formation of cancerous cells in the breast. There are about five health implications attached to most of these drugs and that was why they were banned in the West. But here, no one is asking questions"

Bomedical scientist, Obianuju Ekeocha speaking at the forum also warned that abortion might damage the womb and lead to future infertility.

She called on the Federal Government to resist any pressure from international partners to legalise abortion

Former Governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu, says it is unfair to accuse the Igbo of voting en masse for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), stressing that PDP massively rigged the election in the region. -  Kalu, made the statement said this during an interview session on a Channels TV  programme, tagged, “View from the Top,” yesterday..

According to the former governor said who failed to secure the Abia-North senatorial seat, on the platform of the Progressives Peoples Alliance, believed that he did not lose in the election but was rigged out by the PDP.

He said, “The issue is that what happened in my constituency was a rigged election. Apart from Enugu and Ebonyi states, where the PDP had very good outings, every other state they won in the South-East was rigged.

Kalu said the people of Abia State voted against the PDP because of their feelings towards Governor Theodore Orji and the overbearing nature of the President’s wife, Patience Jonathan.

“So, the Igbo did not make any mistakes, I feel bad when I see people blaming the Igbo. In the presidential election, the result brought out from Abia where I was, did not reflect the voting pattern of the people.

“In Aba, I can tell you and I will tell Jonathan, that he did not win election in Aba. The APC won the election there but when I saw the result, it was a different thing because the people were angry because of the attitude of T. A Orji and the occasional interference of the wife of the President. People were angry.”

Kalu said it would be unfair to criticise a geopolitical zone for voting en masse for a party, adding that in 1999, the South-West voted massively for the then Alliance for Democracy even though Olusegun Obasanjo of the PDP is from the zone.

The former governor said the PDP lost the general election because of its greed and superiority complex.

He said he and a former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, had planned to form a merger around 2007 but his political associates in the South-East thwarted the plans.

He said he was not surprised that Tinubu went on to form Nigeria’s biggest opposition party which finally defeated the PDP.

He said, “The PDP was bound to lose the elections because many people were very greedy. There was impunity; people in the party felt they were mini gods. And when you feel that God Almighty is no longer God and that you are the new God, you are bound to fail and that was what happened.
“The PDP felt that they could afford anything money could buy. My brothers, the Igbo didn’t understand the local politics. What you see in the country today was planned by Bola Tinubu and me.

“He is alive, you can ask him. He planned to go with the Action Congress and I planned to go with the PPA. We said at the same time, we could come back to the stage but the two governors we had from the South-East were not as forthright as Governor Babatunde Fashola. Fashola was the only AC governor at the time.”

A victory thanksgiving service has been held in Abia State by the outgoing Government of Chief Theodore Orji to thank God for his numerous blessings to the State over the past years.

The Interdenominational thanksgiving service which held at the new International Conference Centre, Umuahia featured special prayers, songs and thanksgiving.

Speaking at the event, Governor Orji thanked Abians for their massive support over the past years which he said saw him through governance.

He appealed to Abians to extend the same support they gave to him to his successor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu and expressed optimism that he will do his best in office..

Governor Orji used the forum to appeal to those he may have offended in the course of his job as governor, saying that it was not intentional but done in the interest of the state.

Earlier in his sermon, the Archbishop of Aba ecclesiastical province of the Anglican communion and Bishop of Umuahia Diocese, Most Rev. Ikechi Nwosu said that Governor Orji would be remembered for his patience and general development he brought to the State.

According to him, apart from infrastructural development, Governor Orji brought peace, security, healthcare as well as partnered well with churches in the State in addition to human capacity building especially empowering youths.

APC DISOWNS MINISTERIAL LIST

The All Progressives Congress on Sunday dismissed as mere fiction, a list of ministers being circulated especially on Social Media.

According to the APC, the party has nothing to do with the said list and urged Nigerians to wait for the authentic one which will be made public through the appropriate channels.

This was contained in a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in Abuja.

Mohammed said, “Nigerians should disregard these lists and await the authentic list which will be communicated through the appropriate channels at the right time.”

The APC also cautioned the media against using statements attributing actions to President-elect, without clarification.

The party urged the media to clarify with the authentic officials of the party and the Buhari Campaign Organisation, any issue having to do with the actions of the President-elect, in order to avoid presenting falsehood as facts.

APC said, “The appeal becomes necessary following recent media reports on the actions which the President-elect will purportedly embark upon once he is sworn into office.

“Various people have been quoted in the media on what the President-elect will do or will not do once he assumes office.

“The truth is that these people do not speak for the President-elect, hence the need for the media to clarify such issues with the Chairman of the party, its National Publicity Secretary or the Spokesman of the Buhari Campaign Organization. These officials are always available to clarify issues.”

The party noted that the ongoing transition is a delicate period that columnists with evil intentions could capitalise on to cause disaffection or overheat the polity, hence the need for all stakeholders to be extra-cautious and to put the national interest above all other interests.
