A three-storey building has collapsed at Area Five, Agbama Housing Estate, Umuahia, the Abia State capital.
The building, still under construction, was said to have collapsed around 9.15pm on Wednesday.
There were, however, no casualties as workers at the site were said to have left before the incident.
When our correspondent visited the site on Thursday, the entire structure had been reduced to rubble.
The occupant of the immediate house in the neighbourhood, Mr. Vincent Onyegbule, told our correspondent that the building collapsed after a rainfall.
The father of two said he thought there was an earthquake when he felt a vibration followed by a loud noise as the structure caved in.
He said, “We became confused because our own house was covered with dust from the collapsed building.
“We quickly brought out our two kids from the house.”
The actual cause of the collapse had not yet been established as of the time of filing this report, but it was speculated that it might not be unconnected with the use of substandard materials.
A source said the first floor of the building had stayed for years and soaked much water before other floors were added.
The source also said people had expressed concern when they learnt the building was converted to a three-storey building.
The contractor had, however, assured them that the foundation was solid enough.
Efforts made to find out the owner of the building or the contractor handling the project failed as the site was completely deserted during the visit.
